Fall Schedule

autumn-avenue-bench-40884.jpg

We are a group of people who gather weekly to connect. Most of the time we get together for an hour; sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. We get together for a variety of reasons: to explore thoughtful questions about God, faith and life; to eat and check in with how everyone is doing; to find service opportunities in our community. We are simply trying to live life purposefully and meaningfully.

Below is a list of our upcoming gatherings. Anyone is welcome anytime. For more detailed information, please reach out to Jennifer@TOCLancaster.org.

Changes

brown-white-butterfly-butterflies-colorful-63643.jpg

"With my daughter nearing her high school graduation, I've been thinking a lot about the changes coming our way: the end of an era both for her and our household (she's the youngest); transitions as we make final college preparations; and a beginning for her, and for my husband and me as empty nesters. I am struck by how much this rhythm is part of our lives - ending / transition / beginning. And I wonder how often we are inattentive to these changes because we are more caught up in the details of them."

Join us as we explore the changes we all face. We will meet at Lancaster Theological Seminary's Santee Chapel, 5:30pm on Sundays, except when noted below. Click here for a campus map.

"Fools for Love"

image.png

Lent is a season used by some for reflection and/or self-improvement. This year, Lent begins on Valentine’s Day with Easter falling on April Fools’ Day. Doesn’t life sometimes feel like a combination of those holidays? One moment all is right in the world and then suddenly you feel like the punchline of someone else’s joke? But maybe there’s some wisdom to be found in a journey from Valentine’s Day to April Fools’ Day. Maybe conventional wisdom isn’t quite as wise as what we thought.

Join us this Lenten season as we explore what we know, think we know, don’t really know, and can’t know in our day-to-day lives.

“The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.”

-William Shakespeare, As You Like It

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast.”

-1 Corinthians 1:26-29

Our topics:

2.18 Love

2.25 Laughter

3.4 Longing (Potluck & Community time)

3.11 Lament

3.18 Learn

3.25 Labor

4.1 Live (Easter Hike* - 9am)

We invite you to participate throughout each week by taking photos that capture the subject matter for the upcoming week. For example, the week leading up to Love on 2.18, what do you see that embodies love? Photograph it and post it on social media with #Love and #TheOtherChurch. Then do the same for the following week and so on. Each service we'll have a montage of the photos taken by each of us. What a great way to see through the eyes of others! Take as many as you're inspired to take. If you're not a social media fan, email your photos to Jennifer@TOCLancaster.org.

We gather on Sundays at 5:30pm. All services will be held at Lancaster Theological Seminary's Santee Chapel except for our potluck on 3.4, which will be held at Mayer Commons also located on the seminary's campus. Click here for a campus map.

*The Easter Hike will be the Wind Cave Trail, located in Pequea, PA.

  • From Columbia Ave and 741, take 741/Millersville Rd towards Millersville.
  • In 5 mi, take a right on New Danville Pike
  • In 3.8 mi, take a slight left onto River Corner Rd
  • In 1.3 mi, take a slight left onto River Rd
  • In 1.1 mi, take a right onto River Hill Rd

Ponderable Moments

pexels-photo-355988.jpg

Think of a song or a scene from a movie or book that moved you. Maybe it was a photo or a short story or video. You laughed or cried, or maybe both! You felt inspired or maybe unnerved. You couldn't stop thinking about it because there was something there, some kind of profoundness about it. Maybe you could articulate why. Maybe not. But the reaction was undeniable.

For the next several weeks, we will be sharing with each other these "moments" to ponder and discuss together. Bring your moment and share it with us. We will listen/watch/hear together and then talk about it.

Note that there will be no gathering on Super Bowl Sunday, February 4th.

On February 11th, we will ponder "prayer", a subject that seems to generate great conversation. Some never pray. Others rely on praying regularly. And many fall somewhere in between. We will explore and discuss the ways prayer has been defined by people and traditions, including those with no faith traditions at all.

Join us on Sundays, January 14th through February 11th, 5:30pm at Lancaster Theological Seminary's Mayer Commons. You may email content/song/link to clip ahead of time to Jennifer@TOCLancaster.org if you'd like.

Thanks and we hope to see you there!

December 2017

pexels-photo-688016.jpg

This holiday season we are simplifying our schedule. In an effort to add meaning but not more busyness, we will be gathering in homes for Sunday Supper & Conversation. Our meals are potluck style. We will meet on Sundays at 5:30pm, with the exception of meeting on the Saturday before Christmas, which is the 23rd, also at 5:30pm.

Our theme is Gifts of the Season, with each week exploring a gift meant to enrich the season, a time of year which can often be hectic, overwhelming, and for some, simply not that enjoyable. Whether you love this time of year or loathe it, we think these gifts are for you!

Our schedule and topics are as follows:

11.26 The Gift of Presence

12.03 The Gift of Hospitality

12.10 The Gift of Giving

12.17 The Gift of Receiving

12.23 The Gift of Hope

We would love to have you join us! For more information including locations, please email Jennifer@TOCLancaster.org.

We hope that you and yours have a meaningful, joy-filled holiday season!

Gatherings

The schedule we typically follow is our attempt to incorporate our values sustainably and meaningfully.

The first Sunday we gather for COMMUNITY & SERVICE, typically at 5:30pm. Locations may vary.

The last Sunday we gather for REFLECTION, a service held at Lancaster Theological Seminary's Santee Chapel, 5:30pm.

The Sundays that fall in between we gather for WORSHIP, a service also held at Lancaster Theological Seminary's Santee Chapel, 5:30pm.

Lancaster Theological Seminary is located at 555 W James St, Lancaster 17603. A campus map may be viewed here.

Additional information on each value can be found on our VALUES page.

Our invitation to you is to participate as you are able. While we believe life is richer with community, service, worship, and reflection as part of it, we also value a faith that is holistic and sustainable. That means sometimes not coming to a gathering is just as important as coming to one.

fall2017.jpg

This fall we will be focusing on origin stories found in the book of Genesis. The goal is to learn more about how these stories helped form individuals and communities in the past, and how they might form us today. Our pursuit is both personal and communal because we believe that each one of us is on a journey of our own; and each one of us has the opportunity and responsibility to journey with others. We attempt to honor both the individual and communal aspects of the journey because we value both. We hope you will join us.

Specifics for upcoming gatherings:

Summer Series 2017

Stories are relied upon by all cultures and faiths throughout time. Stories share who we are, where we have been, where we dream of going. Stories are powerful tools that invite people into what matters most or what should be remembered. But we don't necessarily recognize a story right away, or know how to tell one. We must practice. This summer, join us as we listen to and tell stories.
