Song: Vacation

Welcome

Call to Worship (Leader will read regular print; congregants will respond with bold, italic print.)

Temptation surrounds us:

do more, take more, have more.

More food, more money, more power, more life!

‘What could it hurt?’ we hear—from friends, the media, our own souls:

More hunger, more suffering, more need, more fear, more anger.

So we gather in God’s abundance and remember: God rested. We were slaves.

God gave us Sabbath for renewal. In God we have everything!

Let us drink deeply from God’s spirit. God gives us all we need to

Live fully, love deeply, and serve faithfully. Thanks be to God!

This Day: Collected & New Sabbath Poems (Wendell Berry)

1979

I

I go among the trees and sit still.

All my stirring becomes quiet

Around me like circles on water.

My tasks be in their places

Where I left them, asleep like cattle.

Then what is afraid of me comes

And lives a awhile in my sight.

What it fears in me leaves me,

And the fear of me leaves it.

Then what I am afraid of comes.

I live for a while in its sight.

What i fear in it leaves it,

And the fear of it leaves me.

It sings, and I hear its song.

After days of labor,

Mute in my consternations,

I hear my song at last,

And I sing it. As we sing,

The day turns, the trees move.

Vacation (Knight, Gary/Francis, Connie/Hunter, Hank)

Can't seem to get my mind off of you

Back here at home there's nothin' to do

Now that I'm away

I wish I'd stayed

Tomorrow's a day of mine that you won't be in

When you looked at me I should've run

But I thought it was just for fun

I see I was wrong

And I'm not so strong

I should've known all along that time would tell

A week without you

Thought I'd forget

Two weeks without you and I

Still haven't gotten over you yet

[Chorus]

Vacation

All I ever wanted

Vacation

Had to get away

Vacation

Meant to be spent alone

A week without you

Thought I'd forget

Two weeks without you and I

Still haven't gotten over you yet

[Chorus]

Yahweh (U2)

Take these shoes

Click clacking down some dead end street

Take these shoes

And make them fit

Take this shirt

Polyester white trash made in nowhere

Take this shirt

And make it clean, clean

Take this soul

Stranded in some skin and bones

Take this soul

And make it sing

Yahweh, Yahweh

Always pain before a child is born

Yahweh, Yahweh

Still I'm waiting for the dawn

Take these hands

Teach them what to carry

Take these hands

Don't make a fist

Take this mouth

So quick to criticize

Take this mouth

Give it a kiss

Yahweh, Yahweh

Always pain before a child is born

Yahweh, Yahweh

Still I'm waiting for the dawn

Still waiting for the dawn, the sun is coming up

The sun is coming up on the ocean

This love is like a drop in the ocean

This love is like a drop in the ocean

Yahweh, Yahweh

Always pain before a child is born

Yahweh, tell me now

Why the dark before the dawn?

Take this city

A city should be shining on a hill

Take this city

If it be your will

What no man can own, no man can take

Take this heart

Take this heart

Take this heart

And make it break
